75th Anniversary School ReUnion
Held 23/24 June 2012

The weather was not what we had hoped for, but this did not deter some 800 former pupils and staff (most thought it was far more) making their way to Chestnut Grove on 23 June to renew old friendships and to explore the modern new building that had replaced the school of their childhood memories.

The winding path leading to the entrance was decked with flags, courtesy of the PTA. There, the visitors were welcomed by yours truly, before proceeding to the registration areas.

On the day, under the superb management of Sue Waters (School Bursar), the school did us proud. Reception areas had been set up, classrooms prepared for the year reunions, the car park manned, and the dining area transformed to something akin to the Ritz – starched tablecloths, gleaming cutlery and flower displays on every table. Later, a sumptuous meal, prepared by Gemma Sontag and the school’s catering staff, would be served there, making it a fitting end to a memorable day.

During the afternoon, refreshments and a licensed bar set up and manned by the PTA kept hunger and thirst at bay. Meanwhile, musicians and singers from the school’s Music Department kept us all entertained, whilst senior pupils led tours of the new building, which got the thumbs up from everyone. The memorabilia room was a popular haunt, where old school team photographs were pored over and the visitors captured on film. Alison Phillips and her mum on the souvenirs stand (mugs, pens, shopping bags, jigsaws and mints etc – the usual sort of things) did their utmost to relieve visitors of some of their pension, whilst Cassian Zane and others from the school’s photographic department wandered around capturing everything on camera.

Finally, as 9.00 pm approached, the last visitor drifted away, and the main event of the 75 th anniversary reunion had come to a close, but not before it had left those fortunate to have been there with happy memories of what everyone said was a wonderful occasion.

Our thanks go to Nick Christou (Head), Sue Waters and the many school staff that helped on the day in helping to make the reunion such an unqualified success.

The organising committee were Emily Armer (brochure), Alison Phillips (souvenirs), Roy and Ros Bertauche (memorabilia), Rick Smyth (finance), Lisa Miles and Mike Gibbons (PTA), Gemma Sontag (evening buffet), Sue Waters (Bursar and lead school representative), Mike Brazier and Christopher Mansell (former students), Rowan Innes and Dennis Hallam (teachers at the school) and Terry Boyce (Chairman).

But, the reunion weekend was not over yet. Sunday saw some 200+ former students continuing the weekend celebrations at the Old Scholars clubhouse and sports ground, where our hosts were Roy and Ros Bertauche. This was a quieter, more relaxing occasion than the previous day. A buffet lunch was served and even the sun came out towards the end of the afternoon, enabling many to venture outside.

As the England v Italy match approached, the last reunion reveller left for home, bringing to a close the 75th Anniversary School Reunion weekend

Copies of the acclaimed reunion brochure are still available at a cost of £5.00 each, including postage; cheques should be made payable to EBOG Limited and sent to Terry Boyce at 3 Granville Road, Barnet, Hertfordshire EN5 4DU.

Souvenirs (the mugs have all been sold) can still be purchased by contacting Alison Phillips at Alison@craftyali.co.uk.

You can view the many photos taken by Ros Bertauche in the Memorabilia Room by clicking here: Photographs. Click on each individual photo to view it, or click 'slideshow' top right to see them all (then click 'info' to see the names and years as they go through).

We are also hoping to get the photographs taken by the school up on the website shortly.

Best wishes to everyone.
